    • Why has my table top gone milky white?

      That bloom is moisture trapped in the old shellac film, usually from heat or damp. It does not mean the timber is damaged, and it usually reverses without stripping the finish.

    • Can heat rings be removed without refinishing the whole top?

      Usually, yes. A ring that sits in the finish rather than the wood can be re-amalgamated locally and bodied back up, which keeps the surrounding patina untouched.

      Most dining-table tops come in at £180-£520 depending on size and how far the old finish has failed. We confirm a written price before any work starts. See our price guide

    How It Works

    • How long does a French polish take to dry?

      Each layer flashes off in minutes, but the finish keeps hardening for around three weeks. We hand pieces back usable, with written care notes for that first month.

    • Can you polish over an existing finish?

      Sometimes. If the old film is sound we cut it back and build on it; if it has gone milky or is lifting, it has to come off first. We tell you which at the quote.
